Phlegm and what to do when you have a lot it

Just about anyone has had an issue with phlegm in the past – whether because they have the flu or the common cold. As we all know, the vicious gel-like liquid is quite the pest and could easily ruin a performance or a speech… even your sleep.

So what is phlegm? Phlegm is a water-based gel-like substance containing mucus and the bacteria the body expelled, that’s produced in the lower airways. It could be clear, yellow, green, and even dark gray, it all depends on what’s in your tract.

What’s the cause of it? As the colors suggest, a lot! Here are just some of those reasons for excess phlegm.

Grey or White

– An indicator of an upper respiratory infection or sinus congestion caused by bacteria or virus.

Dark Green or Dark Yellow

-It’s caused by an infection of the lower respiratory tract due to a virus or bacteria. The reason for the green color is neutrophils – a type of white blood cell. Although, experts say that it is not always the cause, so maybe you can take a moment before you go pill happy with antibiotics.


– Smoking. That’s tar, resin, and other matter mixed with your phlegm.

Red or Bloody Phlegm

– Haemoptysis is the condition where one coughs up blood with their phlegm. Here’s where it gets scary because it signifies more serious illnesses like: tuberculosis, pneumonia, bronchitis, pulmonary embolism, or even cancer.


– May indicate pulmonary edema, it’s something often seen in people with underlying heart problems.

So what should you do when your phlegm isn’t going away? Well, here are some ways you can remove that pesky phlegm from your throat!

1. Honey and Lemon

With the Vitamin C from the lemon and the antibacterial properties of honey, a combo of the two with your tea will kick out that phlegm.

2. Gargle

Old fashioned salty water gargle is an oldie but a goody as salt water will help you draw out water from your mucous membranes so gargle for every hour for best results.

3. Ginger

A natural decongestant, as well as antihistamine, it’ll help you with your circulation and to pump out those toxins out of you. Also containing shagoal, it’s believed to be a natural enemy of cold viruses!

You can drink it, chew it, or even make it a fine paste for rubbing, it’ll do just the trick!

4. Slippery Elm

It doesn’t just rhyme with phlegm, the powdered bark of this North American palm is believed to help phlegm ball up. Either by tea or by poultice, the slippery elm will take care of that phlegm.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

This substance has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and even anti-fungal qualities. What more can you ask for? Just mix a couple of teaspoons of acv to your warm cup, maybe add some honey and you’ll be on your way to clear days.

6. Turmeric

Definitely a health craze of today, turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that could rival the effectiveness of some pharmaceutical drugs so taking it with your milk, soup, or even just water will give you quick relief, remove the phlegm, and soothe your throat.

7. Garlic

Ani-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti vampires (okay that last one might be made up), garlic or the stinky rose will help you stink that phlegm out of your system. That’s not the best part though, we all use garlic in our food, just pick up a garlicky recipe and you’ll clear your throat in the most delicious way possible.

8. Acupuncture

Okay, maybe this one is a bit disputed but according to Chinese medicine of the past, phlegm is caused by stagnant qi. With the proper therapy it could help not just your nose and throat but your whole body feel better and new.

Of course, even with all these remedies, you should always remember that you also need plenty of rest to get the job done.
